worklog collages - what's next
For the past 16 weeks (!!!!!) I made and shared digital collages recapping the work I did that week. I published them for 6 weeks, and then took a 2 week break, then another 6 weeks, and another 2 week break. I'm due to restart now, and wanted to reflect a bit about how I'm feeling about them now, and how I want to use Instagram now (these collages were my approach to posting content on my Instagram).
recap of what I shared
- I started with trying to share work in three categories: video, art, and app development. There was rarely a week where I did work in all three, and in fact, I don't think I did much app development work at all (at least on personal projects, I did work on a collaborative project that I sometimes added notes on and sometimes didn't).
- I shared analog collages, photos of art and sketches, screenshots of digital work like editing video. And towards the end, I included some animated bits.
reflections
- what I loved: I love love love love love being able to scroll back and see what I worked on a few weeks ago. If I wasn't keeping record, it'd be so easy for me to forget.
- what I was challenged by: definitely still put off making collages until the very last minute. A lot of my notes felt lacking. A little bit of occasional shame saying I'm not doing enough.
- I feel that I'm missing a bigger "why" driving my sharing on Instagram, as well as my just being on/using Instagram. It feels very much like I'm sharing there because I'm supposed to (but says who?). I spend too much time consuming on it, so I also feel obligated to create for it to, to justify and counteract that time. In contrast, I feel a very clear "why" for writing on this blog: it's pure expression and exploration of my thoughts. What would sharing on IG look like with a similar why? Or, should my why be more marketing focused? IG largely feels like a marketing tool. Or an information sharing tool. Not so much an expressive tool. I think IG stories feel more expressive?
- I do view Instagram as a place that enables connecting to other people, but I don't think I use it in a way that makes me feel connected. I think to do that would look like: watching stories instead of reels, and sending responses to them, either reactions or dms. And on the creation side, it looks like posting to stories more mundane shit and not so much marketing attempts? So that's one why to focus on when using IG: to connect with other people through more in-the-moment stories. I do like posting posts as a way of sharing what I'm working on and building that log of work to scroll through. The "why" there is centered around accumulating that and just showing that I'm doing something.
now what?
- I want to keep posting them, but I also want to commit to something like making an analog collage a week for them, or a different format, like sharing inspiration, work, and something else? maybe: work/play/misc? or just two: analog/digital? I like that. That feels good.
- what I want to keep: analog collages, there's something cool about seeing them in a digital space? animated bits, they're just fun. the 6 weeks posting / 2 week break cadence, it feels sustainable.
- what I can leave behind: the app dev/video/art categories. I think I'd rather share notes under project headers. the 3 panel format, I think with analog/digital dichotomy, a two panel post makes sense.
- I missed last week's post (week 43), but I think I'll just post it whenever I do it this week or double post this Saturday.
